CFL Draft Preview: Calgary Stampeders

Canadians Under Contract: 35

One Word Description of Current Canadians: Abundant

Early Round Track Record: Pretty good. In recent years they’ve landed Tsoumpas, Rob Maver, Anthony Parker and Eric Fraser.

First Pick: 1st Round 5th Overall

Number of Picks: 9

Strengths: For one they have strength in numbers since given the sheer number of Canadians they have under contract. They are extremely strong a D-line with Bulcke, Mace, Deane, Phillips and Turner. They also have a solid core at OL, WR and RB.

Potential Pipeline: n/a

Needs: Only place they are really thin is at DB so they will likely look to add there. Other than that Calgary has the luxury of not really having to worry about need and just drafting the best player available. While they are not pressing needs the Stamps may look to add an RB like Nathan Riva for increased depth behind Cornish and a centre given the offseason departure of Tim O’Neil.

Bold Prediction: Given that they have more Canadians under contract than any other team and more draft picks than any other team, look for the Stampeders to draft no less than 4 red-shirt juniors.
