Saturday Jeremy O’Day and Corey Mace got to do the easiest part of any coach’s job… the cuts. As expected, it was a relatively drama free even lacking in surprises. Here are my thoughts on the cuts:
-
Its probably a good sign when the biggest shocker of the
final roster decision is which rookie kicker gets the call (if that’s our most
pressing issue then we are doing ok). That said, Hale winning the kicking job
over Kim was a shocker. Both showed they had big legs. They were both about
even on kickoff length. Kim didn’t miss in the preseason. Hale did. I don’t
know what more Kim could have done to win that job. Obviously Mace saw something
I did not. Let’s hope his right.
-
Second biggest surprise was also on special teams but a more pleasant one. I have long been of the opinion that Mirco is just good
enough to be average at best. I kept hoping we could find better. Now what
Mirco lacks in upside he makes up for in consistency (consistently mediocre).
Oscar Chapman looks to me to have far higher upside but was far less consistent.
I am OK rolling the die on the higher upside guy.
-
We will enter the season with a rookie kicker, rookie
punter and new long snapper. Buckle up.
-
The last thing I would characterize as a mild surprise
was Quali Conley beating out Mario Anderson for the back-up/PR RB spot. I really
liked Anderson and think he can be an impact player. Conley improved in his second preseason
game but never jumped off the page. Wonder if Anderson was not interested in another
year on the PR? Or if Conley was deemed a better pass blocker by the coaches?
-
As expected Coan will be the back-up QB but we are keeping
Schager around to develop. Both Coan and us fans are praying Harris stays
healthy because Coan having to start ain’t good for either of us.
-
4 guys named Johnson made the team… 3 of them are
receivers. As I have often said, you can never have enough Johnson's on hand.
-
Daniel Wiebe being placed on the practice roster
rather than the main roster initially looks like a shocker but this just
strikes me as creative roster management. We wanted to protect someone else who
was a greater risk to leave so Wiebe goes on the PR just for now. Guaranteed come
our first game Wiebe gets activated and plays.
-
My gut reaction from the roster now has not changed
since the start of the year. Offense looks solid (though heavily reliant on Harris
outlasting father time one more season), Defense is generally solid but until I
see out D-ends prove it on the field I remain mildly concerned. Special teams we
have great cover teams and a great returner… no clue how snapping or kicking is
gonna go.
-
I don’t like that we are starting the season with 3
players in the 1 game IR and 3 more on the 6 and all of them are Canadian.
Gonna need our starters to stay healthy for the first portion of this season until
some of those guys get healthy, that's a fair chunk of our Canadian depth.
-
Hope you enjoyed the bye week… now please go enjoy
another bye week.
FWIW my '26 CFL Playlist.
ReplyDeleteThe West Hit Parade
1. Lions - "Roar". ROAuRke & the Lions take next step.
2. Riders - "The Boys Are Back in Town". N'est pas au la "t'Oulette" despite all the losses in FA.
3. Elks - "Young Turks". Plenty of swag with 12 starters decked in GC bling.
4. Bombers - "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do". Too many guys on expiry dates. Zach rated 10th QBR past 2 seasons.
5. Stamps. "Wild Horses". QB yoyo's between good & bad - "knowhutimean, Vern?" Lot of injuries to start year.
The East Charts
1. Alouettes - "Mockingbird". Larks' Alexander trash talks his team to the top.
2. TiCats - "What's New Pussycat?". Can "Puddy Tat" best "Tweety Bird" this year? Mais, non!!
3. REDBLACKS - "Do Wah Diddy Diddy". Coach Diddy has all the RED & BLACK pieces but the game is chess, not checkers.
4. Argonauts - "Six Months In A Leaky Boat". Batten down the hatches. Noah ain't running this ship & you need more than 2 of everything.
West is super unpredictable. The health of Harris, VA and Collaros is the big x-factor. In the East I mostly agree... but that all hinges on Alexander not being a bandaid.
DeleteArgos will surprise ppl. Chad Kelly is still the best QB in the CFL.
ReplyDeleteStamps will be strong again. They gave the Riders & Bombers fits all last season
Argos have the talent on offense (minus a run game). Coaching and defense are the concern at this point
DeleteStamps have some key injuries with Devine-Scott, Nichols, Sambu & Joseph already on the 6 game. Begelton, Orimolade, Webb & Arnold are other players likely candidates for the list as well. So I have my doubts on the Stamps.
ReplyDeleteI do like the Argos offence. Kelly's got as good a receiving corps as there is. I agree with you - they may surprise.
That Stamps D-line suddenly changes the conversation. Still have my doubts but it moves them up in the conversation
ReplyDeleteAs a Rider fan, obviously I hope to see them @ 1. GC odds I looked at unbelievably have the Riders @ 4 AND the Bombers @ #3 best odds to win the Cup. So, allow me one rant this year on the hated Bombers. They having been getting way too much cred IMO for too long.
ReplyDeleteThe Myth - From 2022-'24 the Argos won 2 GC's sandwiched around a 16-2 season & beat the Bombers twice. The Argos were clearly the league's best over that span.
The Trajectory - A dominant GC win in 2019, a squeaker OT win in '21 before the losses. Lost on the last play in 2022, outscored 21-7 in the 2nd half in 2023 before the laugher in 2024. Last year? Scored 21 pts in over 6 minutes, outscored 42-12 in the other 54 & gave up 550+ yds in the semi. Year over year the beatings have gotten worse.
The Culture - O'Shea, Zach, Stanley, Patrick, Willie, Kyrie, Demski & JT all still preach the gospel. It's not working. O'Shea is blindly loyal to the old vets. Why bring in the CFL's best LT if not to protect Zach's blind side?? Is Mikey going to tell Stanley to play RT? It says here that, other than Demski, the above greybeards are on their farewell tour, knowingly or not.
They've been resting on their laurels for years & enough of the running it back again one more time. They're done - stick a fork in them. That's it - I'm out.
I agree, Rider, West is very unpredictable. I looked at Sportsnet, cfl.ca, the Score & 3DN for their predictions. The only consistent ranking from all 4 was SK @ 1 & BC @ 2. Edm & Cal both got ranked #3 twice, Wpg had two 4th place votes & two 5th place votes. Cal & Edm each had one 4th & 5th vote as well.
